Nottingham at a glance

Nottingham! The home of Robin Hood and the heart of the East Midlands. This city has a rich history; from Nottingham castle to the (allegedly) oldest pub in England, there’s plenty to see. But it’s also not short on shopping, restaurants and a rising music industry. The two universities in the city are infamous for their rivalry, and their hilarious interactions on Twitter.

Believe it or not, there’s several company headquarters based in the city of Notts, and therefore jobs aplenty. So if you’re wanting a smaller city – and don’t want to move too far north or south – then come and find out more about this gem of a location.

Area guide to Nottingham

The city centre is where everything is going on, with Rock City and a plethora of theatres and eateries. Hockley is the creative quarter of Nottingham, packed full of independent shops and cafés, and home to the Hockley Hustle music festival. It’ll come as no surprise that this is a popular area for many students out there.

Another notable area is the Lace Market, where the majority of the heritage sites of Nottingham lie. Nearby the city you also have the sprawling hills of Colwick Country Park, the beautiful Newstead Abbey and not forgetting the tranquil woods of Sherwood Forest. Getting out into nature is pretty easy if you live in Nottingham.

Nottingham is made up of two major universities:

Nottingham by Sector

Engineering

Nottingham offers the whole cycle of engineering, from R&D and assembly, to logistics and technical consultancy. There’s also a wide range of industries to choose from, including aerospace, electronics, transport and food and drink. If you’re a budding engineer, you should seriously consider Robin Hood’s hood (we couldn’t resist) as an option.

Financial & business services

With over 126,000 people employed in this sector in Nottingham alone, there’s a wealth of options to choose from. The financial sector specialises in the data and analytical areas of the industry, whilst the city also holds the badge of being the ‘administrative centre of the East Midlands’. If you’re looking to use that degree in an office-based role, then this could be the place for you.

Logistics

Due to its handy location in the midlands, Nottingham serves as the heart for many logistics companies. 77% of the UK population is within a four hour drive, and the city is connected by a plethora of rail companies and airports.

Cost of Nottingham

Here’s some good news: you don’t need a humongous bank account to enjoy a good standard of living in Nottingham. In terms of rent, you’ll be looking at between £200-£270 per month for a single room. The average price of a pint is £3.65, and a bog-standard lunch in the middle of the city centre will set you back £8.

For getting round the city, Nottingham has great bus links. For an adult monthly bus pass, you’re looking at £58, whilst students get a nice discounted rate at £49.30 per month. All in all, if you’re looking to start saving your pennies, Nottingham is a good place to settle.
