Civil Service Fast Stream 2027: How to Apply, Salary and Dates
“I did it with a lot of perseverance.”
Folashade Atiko, a strategy adviser at the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, who joined the Fast Stream’s policy scheme at her fourth attempt.

The Civil Service Fast Stream is the UK government’s graduate leadership programme. You join as a permanent civil servant, move between departments on a series of postings, and are developed towards senior leadership. This guide covers the 2027 entry cycle (you apply in autumn 2026 and start in 2027), and every fact below was checked against official sources on 16 October 2026.
Two points matter before you read on. First, the official site had not yet updated its cycle status when we checked, so the exact 2027 dates are explained in the section on when the Fast Stream opens. Second, it is highly selective: the Cabinet Office recommended 703 people for appointment from 69,046 applications by first preference in the campaign for 2026 entry, a success rate of 1.0% (Cabinet Office recruitment data).

Fast Stream schemes: the 17 streams
The official final selection board page names the schemes: Commercial; Cyber Security; Digital; Diplomatic and Development; Diplomatic and Development Economics; Finance; Government Economics Service; Government Operational Research Service; Government Policy; Government Social Research; Government Statistical Service; Human Resources; Operational Delivery; Project Delivery; Property; Risk Management; and Science and Engineering. You choose your schemes, but not your department or role, although the Fast Stream says it tries to meet location preferences.
Scheme size and difficulty differ sharply. In the 2026 entry data, Government Policy had 201 of the 654 vacancies and Risk Management had five. Success rates ranged from 0.2% for Diplomatic and Development to 4.7% for the Government Economics Service, so the schemes you rank matter.
The Diplomatic and Development scheme is the most demanding on eligibility: it lasts five years, includes an overseas placement, needs British citizenship, at least five of the last ten years living in the UK, and Developed Vetting clearance (official scheme page). Bright Network’s listing for the Government Policy scheme reports placements in three departments and a postgraduate award in Public Policy (Bright Network).
Who can apply
- Degree: the official site says most schemes accept graduates with a 2:2, in any subject for many of them, and that final-year undergraduates, graduates and degree apprentices can apply. Some schemes set subject or classification rules, so read the page for each scheme. Our guide to graduate jobs you can get with a 2:2 covers other options.
- Existing civil servants may be able to apply without a degree. GOV.UK says around one in nine successful applicants in 2024 were already civil servants (GOV.UK case study).
- Nationality: the official nationality page says the Fast Stream is broadly open to UK nationals, Irish nationals, Commonwealth nationals with the right to work in the UK, EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic and Liechtenstein nationals (and family members) with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme or a valid application for it, people with limited or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible to apply for the scheme by 31 December 2020, and certain Turkish nationals. You must be a British citizen for some schemes.
- Right to work: you must keep it for the whole scheme. The Fast Stream says its starting salary does not currently meet the thresholds for new Skilled Worker sponsorship, which is only possible in very specific circumstances and only after an offer.
How to apply: every stage in order
The official how to apply page lists the stages in this order:
- Initial application. You choose up to three schemes and give background information.
- Online tests. Prospects’ profile (November 2024) describes work-based scenarios, a case study assessment and a “using data” test, untimed but to be finished within five days of activation. It also lists a recorded video interview; the official stage list does not show one, so follow your invitation.
- Additional information.
- Assessment centre. A half-day online centre (details below).
- Final Selection Board, for the schemes that have one.
Reasonable adjustments are available at each stage. The Summer Internship Programme uses the same initial online tests, and Bright Network reports a 2027 deadline of 5 November 2026 for it too (Bright Network). You cannot apply for the internship and a Fast Stream scheme in the same year.
The Fast Stream assessment centre
The Fast Stream assessment centre (FSAC) is, in the official words, “a half-day online assessment centre”. You complete three exercises remotely, and each is marked independently by different assessors (official FSAC guide):
- Written advice exercise: advise a senior team in a government department on the implications of a new proposal.
- Stakeholder communication exercise: a one-to-one role-play in which the assessor, as your line manager, asks about assessing or implementing a policy.
- Personal development conversation: a 30-minute one-to-one interview, the third and final exercise (official exercises page).
The first two share one policy theme. If you reach the required standard you are invited to a Final Selection Board for Commercial, Diplomatic and Development, Diplomatic and Development Economics, Economist, Finance, HR, Operational Delivery, Operational Research, Project Delivery, Property, Risk Management, Science and Engineering, Social Research and Statistical Service. There is no board for Government Policy, Cyber or Digital (official page).

How to prepare for the Civil Service Fast Stream
- Read the official FSAC guide and the example exercises it links to, then time yourself on written advice tasks.
- Practise structuring a one-page recommendation: issue, options, risks, recommendation.
- Rehearse role-play with a friend asking policy questions in a manager’s voice.
- Prepare examples against the Civil Service values of integrity, honesty, objectivity and impartiality, which the Fast Stream says it looks for.
- Use our graduate assessment centre guide for the exercise types and our guide to surviving an assessment centre for the mindset side.
- Tailor your application wording using our cover letter guide and ATS-friendly CV advice, even where the form asks for short answers rather than a letter.
Civil Service Fast Stream salary and benefits
The official Fast Stream page states a starting salary of £31,554 and earning potential of £45,000 to £55,000 on completion. That page still carried the 2025/26 cycle banner when we checked, and Bright Network’s 2027 Government Policy listing shows the same £31,554 figure, so confirm it on your offer. Run any figure through our paycheck calculator to see take-home pay.
Official benefits include a permanent contract, membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme, a universal training offer in foundation, leadership and management skills, flexible working arrangements and a residential “Base Camp” in week one. Many schemes support professional qualifications. Prospects reports 22 days’ annual leave plus 10.5 days of public and additional holidays (Prospects). Folashade Atiko’s case study shows the day job: she supported a House of Lords debate and is helping deliver a UK-wide social cohesion strategy.
When does the Civil Service Fast Stream open?
The Cabinet Office said in a written answer on 3 February 2026 that it expected the Fast Stream and Summer Internship campaigns to launch in mid-October 2026 and run for four weeks, with exact dates to be confirmed, and Bright Network reports a 5 November 2026 deadline for the 2027 schemes. The official Fast Stream pages we could open on 16 October 2026 still showed 2025/26 as closed (last year’s window ran from midday 9 October to midday 6 November 2025), so check the official site for the live dates and use our graduate schemes hub to compare every other employer’s window.
Because the window lasts only about four weeks, start your preparation before it opens. Our guide on when to apply for graduate jobs explains how timing differs between rolling and fixed-window schemes.
Fast Stream vs other graduate schemes
The Civil Service Fast Stream runs one fixed annual window, while the Big Four mostly recruit on a rolling basis. For a direct comparison of pay, entry rules and timing, read our Fast Stream vs PwC graduate scheme guide, then the single-employer pages for PwC, Deloitte and Accenture.
