Tech versus banking, at two employers that don’t run a single fixed graduate scheme the way the Big Four do. The Google Graduate Scheme and the J.P. Morgan Graduate Scheme both hire on a rolling basis into named tracks rather than one uniform cohort — but the pay gap between them is wider than almost any other comparison on this site, once you factor in J.P. Morgan’s Investment Banking track.

The single biggest difference

Google does not publish a UK graduate salary on the pages we could read, and its London internship postings state no pay. Glassdoor shows only four London new-grad software engineer submissions (£60,000 to £106,000, 2023 to 2026), which is too few for an average. J.P. Morgan also publishes no single UK graduate salary; reported base figures run from about £35,000 to £45,000 in Technology and Operations to £60,000 to £70,000 in Investment Banking, with discretionary bonus on top in some divisions. On the evidence available, the gap between the two depends on which role and division you land, and neither employer’s offer can be predicted from these estimates.

Google’s postings say Google stock unit (GSU) grants “are not guaranteed, are discretionary”, so equity is not captured in any figure above. Run either offer through Debut’s Paycheck Calculator to see the actual take-home difference.

What the job actually feels like

At Google, Associate Account Strategist Kelsey talks about what drew her to the company beyond the brand name: “I don’t want to say that Google is Google, but it has a brand reputation for a good reason. It’s dynamic and exciting company and it’s got so much scope.” On the process itself, she was struck by how much weight was put on personality over CV: she says Google talked “more about you than what your CV says” (Source: Bright Network, Kelsey’s success story)

Software Engineer Beyza Bozbey, who joined Google’s YouTube Comments team after three attempts at the interview process over two years, says seeing a new feature reach users worldwide is what gets her out of bed each morning. Her advice to anyone rejected first time: “Do not give up.” (Source: Bright Network, “My Path to Google”)

At J.P. Morgan, Graduate Credit Sales Analyst Coral — a Mathematics graduate from Warwick — says she chose the firm because the people she met at its Spring Week and campus events seemed like-minded, and that its Spring Week was the most “insightful and challenging” of the three she attended. (Source: Bright Network, Coral’s success story)

J.P. Morgan’s own hiring team says it is interested in hiring “the whole person”. (Source: JPMorganChase, “How we hire”)

Programme structure

Google publishes no rotation structure on the pages we could read; it posts early-career roles one at a time and you are hired into a specific team. Google has not published the length or structure of a full-time APM programme.

J.P. Morgan runs division-based programmes (its graduate page describes on-the-job training combined with structured learning); programme length varies by division and is stated in each advert.

Google vs J.P. Morgan Graduate Scheme 2026: Application Process

Google has not published stages or timings on the pages we could read. Its postings confirm an application with a CV and transcript, rolling review and a wait that “can take upwards of 90+ days”. Candidate accounts of later stages (coding screens, interview loops) are reported only.

J.P. Morgan runs a shorter, 4-stage process: Online application (CV, cover letter, eligibility questions) → Online assessments (numerical, verbal and situational judgement tests) → HireVue video interview (pre-recorded, on motivation and competencies) → Assessment centre, internally nicknamed “Superday” (group exercises, case studies, interviews with senior staff). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so applying early matters more than hitting the formal deadline.

Locations

Google: every UK early-career posting we read in full is in London, and interns must be in the UK throughout.

J.P. Morgan: many UK graduate roles are in London, including Canary Wharf, with some programmes in Glasgow, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Google’s UK early-career postings we read were all in London; J.P. Morgan offers some programmes outside London, so location is more flexible there.

Deadlines

Google: there is no single date. The London Software Engineering/SRE internship for Summer 2027 closes on 23 October 2026, the APM, APMM and Forward Deployed Engineering internships on 13 November 2026 and the Product Deployment Engineer internship on 20 November 2026, all with rolling review (official postings, checked 17 October 2026). No dates are published for full-time graduate roles.

J.P. Morgan: several UK full-time programmes for 2027 starts, across London, Glasgow, Manchester and Edinburgh, close on 1 November 2026. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so a role can fill before its closing date; check your programme’s exact date on J.P. Morgan’s graduate page.

Both employers reward early applications far more than most Big Four/consulting schemes — neither operates a single fixed cutoff you can safely wait for.

Benefits

Google: its benefits page loads with JavaScript and could not be read, so benefits are not stated here; reported lists (health insurance, parental leave, GSU equity) are unverified.

J.P. Morgan: Pension contributions, health insurance and wellbeing perks, alongside the divisional bonus structure that makes up a large share of total compensation in Investment Banking specifically.

A word from people already doing the job

Google’s Kelsey and Beyza both point to a hiring process built around personality and persistence over pure CV strength — Beyza needed three attempts across two years before her offer came through. J.P. Morgan’s Coral points to the Spring Week as the moment that actually decided her choice of employer, not the brand name alone: it was the people, not the logo, that made J.P. Morgan stand out among the three banks she interned with.

Google vs J.P. Morgan Graduate Scheme 2026: Which One Should You Apply To?

Pick Google if you want to join a specific team through role-by-role postings, are a penultimate or final-year student for the London internships, and can wait: Google’s postings say a decision “can take upwards of 90+ days”. Pick J.P. Morgan if you’re drawn to structured rotations across divisions, want the option of an Investment Banking division (reported base pay is higher there than in Technology and Operations), and prefer a published 1 November 2026 closing date for several programmes.
