Logical Reasoning Test: Format, Method & Practice for Graduates
Rolling Logical reasoning tests are set by each employer in its own process, so there is no single date. Check your invitation.

Logical reasoning is the name many employers use for tests of patterns and sequences. SHL, one of the main test publishers, says its inductive reasoning tests may also be called abstract or diagrammatic reasoning. You see a row of shapes and must work out the rule that completes it. This page explains the format, shows a method that works under time pressure and links to official practice material. For word and number tests, see our verbal reasoning guide and numerical reasoning guide.
Logical reasoning test: format in brief
| Point | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Question type | A sequence of five boxes; choose which of A to E completes it |
| Other names | Inductive, abstract or diagrammatic reasoning |
| What it measures | Spotting rules in patterns, not general knowledge |
| Practice | Free example questions on SHL Direct |
Format and timing differ by employer and test provider. Your invitation says which test you will sit.

Start with what changes
Do not stare at the whole pattern. Ask one question per box: what moved, what changed colour or size, what was added or removed? Most sequences combine two or three small rules, such as a shape rotating while a dot alternates sides.
Test your rule on every box
A rule that fits boxes one to three but fails box four is wrong. Checking the rule against all five boxes takes seconds and avoids the most common mistake, which is picking the answer that merely looks right.
Pace, and when to skip
If nothing clicks, mark a guess and move on. Time lost on one stubborn sequence costs several easier ones later. Practise with a timer so the pace feels normal on the day.
Where it fits in the process
Employers often send reasoning tests straight after the application form. See the graduate online tests guide and the Watson Glaser guide for the critical thinking test that often sits alongside them.

A four-step method for each question
1. Scan
Look across all five boxes before deciding anything. Note every visible change.
2. Name the rule
Say it in words: for example, the shape rotates 90 degrees and gains one dot.
3. Test it
Apply the rule to each box. If one fails, revise the rule.
4. Choose and move
Pick A to E, then go to the next question without second-guessing.

Logical reasoning test FAQ
Is logical reasoning the same as inductive reasoning?
Often yes. SHL says inductive tests may also be called abstract or diagrammatic reasoning.
Can I use a calculator?
Pattern tests rarely need one. Check your invitation for the rules of your test.
How do I practise?
SHL Direct offers free example questions and practice tests.
Is there negative marking?
It varies by employer and test. Your invitation or the test instructions will say.
