The Nationwide graduate scheme for September 2027 runs as six groups of Development Programmes. Here is what Nationwide has published, what is only reported, and how to apply.

Talent & Recruiting

The Nationwide graduate scheme is not one programme but a set of Skills Development Programmes, grouped into six areas, all with a September 2027 start. Nationwide is a mutual with no shareholders, a 25,000-strong team and 16 million members, and it recruits graduates, career changers, industrial placement students, apprentices and summer interns through its early careers pages. This guide covers what Nationwide has published, what is only reported by third parties, and how to apply. For other employers, see our graduate scheme hub.

When does the Nationwide graduate scheme open?

Nationwide says its Skills Development Programmes “typically open for applications in autumn each year” and advises applying as soon as you can, because roles may close early if it receives a high volume of applications. For 2027 starts, the Data & Analytics People programme opens w/c 12 October 2026, three Business Banking programmes open w/c 26 October 2026 (officially stated), and Bright Network reports a 6 November 2026 closing date for several programmes, which Nationwide has not confirmed on the pages we could read. See the dates for other employers on our graduate scheme hub and our guide on when to apply for graduate jobs.

Which Nationwide graduate programmes are open now?

As of 17 October 2026, Nationwide’s programme pages show three statuses.

  • Opening w/c 12 October 2026 (now): Data & Analytics Development Programme, People (locations to be confirmed).
  • Opening w/c 26 October 2026: Business Operations & Improvement Development Programme, Business Banking; Customer & Service Excellence Development Programme, Business Banking (locations to be confirmed); Data & Analytics Development Programme, Business Banking.
  • All other programmes below: each links to an “Apply now” advert on nationwide-jobs.co.uk. That site is rendered by JavaScript, so we could not read live status or closing dates there. Check each advert before you plan around a date.

Who can apply to the Nationwide graduate scheme?

These answers come from Nationwide’s own FAQ.

  • You do not need to have recently graduated.
  • Career changers are welcome; the programmes are designed for both graduates and career changers.
  • If your Autumn 2026 application was unsuccessful, you can apply again for Autumn 2027. Show what you have learnt over the past 12 months.
  • You can apply for more than one programme and complete the online assessment once. If you meet the requirements for more than one, Nationwide asks which you want to continue with before inviting you to an Assessment Event.
  • Nationwide does not offer visa sponsorship. You must have the right to work in the UK when the programme starts and for its full duration, without sponsorship.

Nationwide has not published degree rules on the programme pages we could read, and the full adverts that hold them were not readable by our tools. Read the advert for your programme before applying. If you are worried about classification, our guide to graduate jobs you can still get with a 2:2 covers other options.

Nationwide graduate scheme application process

The stages Nationwide names publicly are:

  1. Online application. Choose a programme and apply through the advert on nationwide-jobs.co.uk.
  2. Sova online assessment. Used during initial screening (see below).
  3. Assessment Event. Nationwide invites successful candidates to an Assessment Event.
  4. Offer.

Nationwide has not published the exercises, length or format of the Assessment Event on the programme pages we could read. One older, reported account exists: a 2018 Nationwide press release described online assessments followed by a digital assessment centre with a 25-minute escape room, a strengths-based interview and a “Dragon’s Den” style pitch. It is dated 2018 and the process may have changed, so treat it as background, not a guide. Our graduate assessment centre guide and assessment centre survival guide cover the general format.

How to prepare for the Nationwide application

Graduate preparing for an online assessment for the Nationwide graduate programme at a desk.

Nationwide says the recruitment team reviews every application and that it does not use AI to make final recruitment decisions. During initial screening it uses the Sova online assessment platform, which uses automated technology to compare responses with predefined criteria and benchmarks, with the same scoring criteria for all candidates.

On AI, Nationwide’s rules are specific. You can use AI to research Nationwide, prepare for interviews and refine your application. Anything you submit must be honest, accurate and your own. Do not use AI to complete assessments or interviews, or to invent information.

Practical steps:

  • Match your application to the behaviours Nationwide publishes: “We feel what customers feel. We say it straight. We push for better. We get it done.”
  • Build a CV that screening software reads cleanly, using our ATS-friendly resume guide, and follow our cover letter guide if the advert asks for one.
  • If you need adjustments, email [email protected] as soon as possible after applying. More information is on Nationwide’s help and support page. Nationwide is a Disability Confident employer.
  • For a general example of how a large employer runs assessment days, see our PwC assessment centre guide. Nationwide is not PwC and its process differs.

Nationwide graduate scheme salary and benefits

Nationwide’s job board lists both Technology Development Programme roles (Infrastructure Engineer and Software Engineer) at £34,000, full time. Nationwide has not published salaries for the other programmes on the pages we could read, and we have not found a confirmed benefits list for graduates, so we do not state one. The full adverts say they cover benefits; check them. To see what a salary means after tax, use our paycheck calculator.

Locations

Programmes run in Swindon (Nationwide’s head office), Glasgow, London and Northampton. Swindon appears across most groups. Glasgow features in Technology, Finance, Payments, Change and the Portfolio Management Office role. Northampton appears in the Retail programmes. London appears in Treasury, Payments, Change and Internal Audit. Several programmes have a London-only advert alongside the multi-location one, so check which advert you are applying to. Business Banking, People and one Customer & Service Excellence programme list locations as to be confirmed.

Nationwide vs other banking graduate schemes

Nationwide is a mutual and groups its programmes by function, with qualification support in Finance and Audit. Compare it with our guides to the Santander graduate scheme, the NatWest graduate scheme, the Barclays graduate scheme, the Lloyds graduate scheme and the HSBC graduate scheme.
