Psychometric Tests for Graduate Jobs UK: Types, Timings and How to Pass
“Practice is the key to success when it comes to psychometric tests.”
Rachel Swain, editorial manager at Prospects, in Prospects’ psychometric tests guide (July 2025). One editor’s view, not a statement from any employer.
Psychometric tests are the online tests many UK graduate employers use before they ever meet you. They are not one test: they are a family that includes aptitude tests, personality questionnaires and situational judgement tests, each with a different format and a different way to prepare. This guide maps the family using Prospects’ psychometric tests guide, then points to our deeper guides for each type. For which employer uses which test, see Graduate Online Tests UK 2027.
What this page does not do: it does not promise pass marks, because employers set their own, and it does not claim any named employer’s test content. Timings below are Prospects’ rough guides, so the time in your invitation always wins.

The main types explained
Aptitude tests
Prospects says aptitude tests assess reasoning or cognitive ability, are administered under exam conditions, and often give you about one minute per multiple-choice question. Your result is compared to a standard, so you must reach a certain score to pass. Numerical, verbal and abstract or logical reasoning are the common forms.
Evidence: Reported.
Personality questionnaires
You are shown statements about ways of feeling or acting and record how much you agree. Prospects says expect 15 to 30 minutes for 50 to 200 questions, usually online, with no strict exam conditions. It adds that consistency checks are built in, so answer as you would at work.
Evidence: Reported.
Situational judgement tests
You get a hypothetical work situation and choose or rank responses. You may be asked for the most and least effective response, a ranking, or a single best choice, so read the instructions each time. Our SJT guide goes deeper.
Evidence: Reported.
How to prepare
- Set a timer and do full-length practice sessions, because most tests are time-pressured and familiarity cuts stress and boosts speed.
- After each practice test, review every mistake and work out why you got it wrong, then track your progress across several tests.
- Brush up the skill each test uses: percentages, ratios and charts for numerical; reading comprehension and logical deduction for verbal; pattern recognition for abstract.
- If you know the employer’s test provider, prepare for that one specifically.
- On the day, read the instructions carefully, sleep well and use a quiet space.

Which graduate jobs use psychometric tests?
Prospects says not all jobs require them, but they are increasingly common in banking and finance, consulting, engineering and technology, and law, and are used by large organisations for graduate schemes across industries. For employer-by-employer detail we have verified, use Graduate Online Tests UK 2027, and for what happens after the online stage read our graduate assessment centre guide, PwC assessment centre guide and Deloitte assessment centre guide. Frequently asked questions
What is a psychometric test?
Prospects describes graduate psychometric tests as tests that help identify your skills, knowledge and personality, often used at preliminary screening or within an assessment centre. Most are online and most are timed.
What is the difference between aptitude and personality tests?
Aptitude tests assess reasoning or cognitive ability under exam conditions, and you must reach a certain score to pass. Personality tests explore your interests, values and motivations, have no right or wrong answers, and usually have no time limit, according to Prospects.
How long do psychometric tests take?
Prospects gives rough guides: aptitude tests 15 to 60 minutes, personality tests 15 to 40 minutes, situational judgement tests 20 to 45 minutes and emotional intelligence tests 30 to 60 minutes. Your invitation states the real length.
Can I cheat a personality test?
Prospects warns that trying to cheat can backfire because consistency checks are built in. Think about how you would behave at work, not socially, and stay authentic but professional.
Do all graduate jobs use psychometric tests?
No. Prospects says they are increasingly common, especially in banking and finance, consulting, engineering and technology, and law, and are commonly used by large organisations recruiting for graduate schemes.
How should I practise?
Prospects advises full-length timed practice, reviewing every mistake, tracking progress across several tests, and preparing for the specific test provider if you know it. Our guides cover verbal, numerical, logical and situational judgement tests.
