What is the average salary for a radiography technician with experience?

The average salary for a radiography technician with experience can vary depending on factors such as location, industry, level of experience, and education. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2020, the median annual wage for radiologic technologists and technicians was $62,280. However, the lowest 10 percent earned less than $42,920, while the highest 10 percent earned more than $94,370.

It’s worth noting that salaries can also vary based on the specific type of radiography technician. For example, a computed tomography (CT) technologist or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologist may earn a higher salary due to their specialized training and expertise.

I’m an Australian radiographer, and I work for a private company, in their own clinic, a private hospital, and a few small public ones. I am in my second year post grad, and I work in multiple modalities – CT, x-Ray, mammography, angiography, theatre, DEXA, and OPG/cephalometry. I also do between 3–7 Days of “on call” every month. I work full time, generally 0830–1700, with a few slight variations, and only do weekends or overnight if I’m on call.

I usually bring home between $2000 and $2600 per fortnight, but have had the occasional pay reach $3000.

When I did my taxes this year, my pay before tax for the year was over $85,000, but of course about $25,000 went to the taxman. About $5000 of the money taxed went to my HECS (student loan), which brought it down to about $40,000.

I also have about 4 weeks of paid leave per year, and every month I get a paid rostered day off (the rostered day off comes from the way they structure our work week).

Because of the Australian school year being February-November, I graduated and started working half way through the 2019/2020 financial year. I didn’t pay nearly as much tax because my income for the year was much less, and also wasn’t required to contribute to my HECS.

*All numbers rounded to the nearest $1000.

*HECS varies greatly from person to person depending on what the tuition cost is and how many subjects are paid by HECS – I used HECS for the full cost of all my subjects (plus two repeats) at Charles Sturt University, between 2015 and 2019.

*Taxation varies by state and income bracket.

*Pay in medical imaging varies hugely between countries. In Australia it’s obviously a well compensated field, but I know of people for example in the NHS in the UK who are earning less than me despite higher qualifications, responsibilities, and more years of experience.
