Being a Paediatrician is actually quite surreal. You have to understand the mind of the child and parent whilst also being professional but fun! It’s a wonderful job 🙂 🙂
Paediatricians have to be flexible; opportunistically examining patients e.g. listen to the heart if they are already fast asleep,if they are comfy on Mum/Dads lap then leave them there, use toys and fun things to engage them and make them feel safe.
You have to be able to adapt to any situation! Also, you have to anticipate common things (taking the nappy off will almost always result in a wonderful wee…if you were thinking a urine specimen might be needed, keep the urine-pot handy for such circumstances!).
The ability to multitask and think ahead are vital for a Paediatrician!
Often the workload is significantly high and being able to support junior colleagues is the key to a smooth day.
As was already mentioned; you deal with very well and very sick patients. Being able to deal with that kind of stress whether in the delivery room, resus room, ward or clinic is something you have to get used to flipping in between. You might be congratulating the birth of a beautiful baby and doing a newborn check one minute, then the bleep goes and you’re attending a neonatal crash call that has a poor outcome. You must be resilient yet empathetic.
Safeguarding is the fear of every paediatrician. It just reminds you what a horrid world we live in. To witness or find the cruelty that some children and young people are subject to is absolutely heart sinking. Remaining professional and compassionate is what gets you through and allows you to do the best for your patient and family.
It’s an emotionally charged speciality. It’s great to have emotion and one should never strive to become cold or unaffected (and that’s the day you should stop being a Paediatrician). It’s this emotion that aids your gut-feeling when it comes to a diagnosis, the tone and manner in which you speak to frightened parents and vulnerable children.
Being a peoples-person helps in Paediatrics. Day in and day out your communication skills are tested; you must have excellent child and parent communication skills. The Paediatricians with the most complaints, are the rude, abrupt, non-compassionate ones who stand out for the wrong reasons. Their knowledge may be great, but if your people skills aren’t, you can’t survive.
You have to dig deep when taking a history, not just the standard medical history subheadings, but all the things to do with the family and their circumstance. You have to take on board and elicit the parents difficulties, their own health and be tuned in to what environment this child or young person is living in. It really matters.
A good paediatrician looks at the child holistically and as part of a family. They have a broad-based thinking and don’t just hone in on one thing. If you don’t look at the bigger picture, you’ll miss something even bigger.
Professionally, a good paediatrician will educationally better themselves (attending good conferences, courses, contributing academically on a local and global level).
You have to be the kind, fun and competent detective. You are the child’s advocate and their best interests have to be at the heart of anything and everything you do.
Being smiley and knowing the latest nursery rhymes, kids TV programmes, football teams etc are all powerful tools…
