I’ve been working in EMS for 13 years. I’m a certified paramedic, tactical medic as well as trained in flight medicine. I’m the lead paramedic on my crew (which means I’m the boss and run my crew) and I’ve worked as a lead paramedic for several years. I’m damn good at my job, but I don’t get paid as much as some may expect.
Working on SWAT was the best pay I’ve ever received in EMS. I was a tactical medic for 5 years, and towards the end of my career on SWAT I was making about $68–70k annually. My team was full time.
Now I’m working as a lead paramedic. I’m the boss of many EMT’s and paramedics. I’m being paid about $60,000 annually as a full time worker. That’s also with 13 years of experience. To some it may seem like a lot. This is a full time job. I’m on call 24/7. That’s not a joke. I am the only lead paramedic on my crew, which means if we are short staffed or I need to go in and boss people around it doesn’t matter if it’s 3 am or 3 pm, I’m on call and need to go in. So I work 24/7, all year, and I respond to some of the worst calls. I also don’t get to say hey it’s a slow day I’ll put work off until tomorrow. No. I spent 15 hours at work the other day where I resuscitated and performed in field intubation on several patients, one of which was a small child. Throughout my years in EMS I’ve seen people of all ages with more casualties than you could think of. I’ve had shot at before, have had knives thrown at me, have had people try poking me with needles and have been in hand to hand combat situations. (That practically sums up 5 years of SWAT.) This job is not easy, even if you aren’t on SWAT. It’s an incredibly challenging and emotionally damaging job. It is certainly not meant for everyone, and not everyone realizes that. I truly believe that is why we get paid so little. Not many people realize we can’t save every patient we have, and how knowing that kills us. There are calls I don’t even talk to my kids or my fiancé about because I feel like if I did I’d damn them with what I’d have to share.
