Lawyer salary by experience in the UK

ExperienceSalary range
Entry (Newly Qualified, regional firm)£29,000 – £45,000

Firm type is the single biggest driver of pay in this profession — a newly qualified solicitor at a regional high street firm and one at a Magic Circle firm can earn three times as much for the same seniority. Practice area matters too: corporate, finance and M&A consistently out-earn family, criminal and high street conveyancing work. Bonuses at large commercial firms can add another 10-20% on top of base salary.

How to Become a Lawyer (Solicitor) in the UK

The traditional route starts with a qualifying law degree (LLB, 3 years) or any degree followed by a law conversion course (PGDL/GDL). Since September 2021, all new solicitors qualify via the SQE1 and SQE2 exams — which replaced the old LPC and training contract system — alongside 2 years of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE), which can now be completed across up to four different employers rather than a single training contract. Registration with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) completes qualification.
