What’s on Quora?

What is the average salary for emergency medical technicians (EMTs)? Do they often work long hours with little sleep and irregular schedules?

Top Answer

When I worked my first ‘ambulance attendant’ job in 1974, EMT was brand new and not required by the state. We worked a 24 on-24 off schedule. We had 1 or 2 Kelly Days which was a day off and granted by supervisors if enough people showed up to work. We grossed $600 a month and took home $400. We worked at most 360 hours a month so I figure we were making $1.666 an hour. I retired as a paramedic working 24 on-48 off every month if I didn’t take any time off (vacation, comp time, calling in sick) and made $90,000 my last full year. I worked local government my entire career – private providers paid less.
