What the two main graduate schemes involve
Engineering Business (any degree, 2:2). BA describes strategic planning for a fleet of over 250 aircraft: organising maintenance schedules for short- and long-haul aircraft, long-term maintenance strategy, projects on which aircraft enter and leave the business, and managing large volumes of suppliers so parts are in the right place. It runs through a series of placements over two years.
Engineering Technical (2:2 in mechanical or aeronautical engineering). BA says graduates apply technical knowledge to keep aircraft safe and reliable, with examples such as new business class seats, inspecting a new aircraft after delivery and cabin design for the Boeing 777-X.
Finance (2:2, three years). Three rotational placements with support towards CIMA, ACCA or ACA. This intake is shown as closed.
British Airways graduate application process and stages
The Engineering Business listing sets out five steps. Timings below are BA’s own for this cycle.
Step 1: Pre-application task
Click apply to reach the Discover & Prep hub and complete the Pre-Application Task before you apply. Official.
Step 2: Application
Once the hub activities are done you can begin the application. Official.
Step 3: Online assessments
Invited after submitting the application. BA does not name the test provider or format on the pages read: Not published. See our online tests guide for what other employers publish.
Step 4: Video interview
Assesses motivation and fit for the role. Invitations for this cycle go out in November. Official.
Step 5: Assessment centre at Waterside
Interview plus work-related exercises at BA’s Waterside head office, due in early January for graduate schemes and early December for placements and the internship. Official. See our assessment centre guide.
Two rules matter: if you miss the deadline at any stage, the application is automatically withdrawn, and you can apply to only one emerging talent scheme. After an offer, BA runs pre-employment checks that typically take 12–16 weeks, including five years of employment or education history, referees and a criminal record check (hiring process, Official).
Who can apply and visa sponsorship
Graduates need a minimum 2:2 or equivalent, achieved or expected, with a mechanical or aeronautical engineering requirement for Engineering Technical. Placements and the internship ask for a predicted 2:2 in any subject and say you must return to university afterwards. Everyone must show the right to work in the UK for the full length of the programme. On sponsorship, BA states that the Engineering Technical scheme is not currently eligible, that the Engineering Business scheme leads to roles which are not currently eligible, and that the Business Graduate role after the placement or internship is not currently eligible. The Wales placement lists only the right-to-work requirement. Its site is at Cardiff Airport in Rhoose and BA highly recommends that candidates can drive because transport links are limited. Official.
Salary and benefits
Published pay is £33,000 (Engineering Technical and Engineering Business), £34,500 (Finance), £26,000 pro rata for the Heathrow placement and internship, and £23,875 pro rata for the Wales placement. BA says graduates get the same benefits as other colleagues from day one, including heavily discounted flights, 22 days of annual leave on the graduate page, and access to graduate and apprentice networks and volunteering. The wider benefits page lists a bonus scheme, flexible benefits with a defined-contribution pension and unlimited standby travel, and quotes salaries of £28,500–£33,000 depending on programme, which differs from the Finance listing, so use the listing for the scheme you apply to (benefits, Official).
How to prepare: checklist
BA recommends the free Forage engineering simulation and its student site Speedbird-Z, which has digital mentors, learning modules and events.
What former interns say
BA’s own listing quotes Nandini Saini, a former Future Leader intern, who said she was given real responsibilities, including helping create an Environmental Standards Manual, during a three-month internship. This is one person’s account, published by BA itself, so treat it as employer-selected. I found no independent named graduate quote for this scheme.
British Airways vs other graduate deadlines
BA’s 4 November close sits between the NHS GMTS (28 October) and the Civil Service Fast Stream (5 November). See every date in our graduate scheme deadlines calendar and browse all employers on the graduate scheme hub.
