What’s on Quora?

Is respiratory therapist a good career? Is the schooling competitive to get into? Is anyone an RT? Is the pay good? I’m a currently a junior in high school. Next can I apply to an RT program straight out of high school?

Top Answer

It is a great career! Not as competitive as nursing but still you need good grades in the pre reqs to get into the program! I was a nursing major and I got into the LVN program and didn’t think nursing was for me. I just applied at my local community college for the RT program and I’m waiting to hear back in July 🙂 My brother is an RT and made close to 80k this past year. He started off at $38 an hour and We live in southern California and he works at our local hospital. You can declare RT your major but you have to complete your general Ed and pre reqs anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry before applying. If you do your general Ed and even take some summer courses you should be well on your way to applying, do well on your classes the first time around it’ll help you save time and money. Also speak to a school counselor some schools have counselors specific to your major. This will help guide you and help you avoid taking classes you don’t need.
