How much do anesthesiologists make?

I am retired from the NHS hence this answer can only reflect circumstances as they pertained to the last years of my appointment. In other words this may be out of date. The remuneration due to a consultant (top job) doctor working in anaesthesiology in the UK is in the public domain (Jobs section of the British Medical Journal, BMJ). It is negotiated at a national level by the doctors and dentists review board on a more or less annual basis. It is complicated and calculated simplistically on years served and the number of sessions undertaken. A full time consultant would undertake 11 sessions per week (2 half sessions per day for 5 days plus I session for on call). Each session is a 4 hour period though this period is usually 5–7 hours each in practice. What should be a 44 hour week usually extends beyond this by 5 -15 hours.

There is no difference by specialty nor is there a gender gap (despite what you may read). Your contract is reviewed annually and adjustments made according to actual times worked. In addition there is an iniquitous process of additional payments or awards paid annually that is used to keep colleagues in line. Who gets these is akin to appointing a pope and is signalled by smoke from a chimney or, more likely, “A quiet word in the ear my boy, if you would”.

Junior doctor pay is even more complicated and influenced by the EU working time directive which largely destroyed working morale in UK doctors messes. In addition there are different types of doctor, different grades, those with professional qualifications in anaesthesiology and those without. There are locum tenens, university appointments and several other variations.

In addition you can undertake private practice in your own time. This can be full time or part time. Electing to do this incurs a penalty to your NHS salary and pension legislation encourages a reduction in contribution to your NHS commitment. Depending on the vigour of the local private sector you may wish to do more or less private practice. You can double (anaesthesiology) or treble (surgery) your NHS salary in private practice. In the USA things are different. Anaesthesiologists are very highly paid as opposed to just well paid in the UK.

The range of salaries from bottom to top is thus, national minimum wage to about £110,000 p/a, without private practice. Your NHS salary can be doubled with pay awards.

As of 2023, anesthesiologists in the United States typically earn a salary ranging from approximately $300,000 to $500,000 per year, with the average salary around $400,000. Factors influencing this salary include geographic location, years of experience, type of practice (private practice, hospital-employed, academic), and subspecialties within anesthesiology. In some high-demand areas or specialized fields, salaries can exceed $500,000. Additionally, anesthesiologists may receive bonuses and other compensation, which can further increase their total earnings.
