I was very clear about not doing engineering or basic science. I wanted to do architecture or fashion designing (apparel production to be more specific) . Joined School of planning and architecture in 2008.
I completed my B.arch in 2013 from one of the School of planning and Architecture (under MHRD). I have finished my Masters in Infrastructure design and management from one of the old IITs.
JOB : I have 20 months of work experience in two different organisation. Currently I am in my third company, where I work with scientists and design their labs .I also work as a in house architect for their organisation taking care of BOQ and other civil works. I am earning 52,000(in hand salary) per month from my job.
Private Projects (freelancing) : Beside that I look out for small to medium scale residential projects and interior/exterior 3d modelling works which add up to something between 3000 to 25000 every month, but it is not fixed. Overall in a year maximum I have earned was around 45 to 60 k from private projects. Since passing B.Arch in 2013 I have earned 86,000 from private projects. Yeah I do keep a check and I have a separate account for my freelancing work.
Coaching Classes :
NATA: At times I don’t get projects.I take up students and mentor them for NATA exam. I charge around 10 to 12 k per student. This also not a regular thing.
CAD/ BIM – Since 2nd yr of my B.arch I am good in BIM software . (Its not 3d, its Building information modelling). With time I got better and even made it to final rounds of few national competition organised by Autodesk. Well naturally it was one of my source of income and I have also taken up students for teaching BIM software and CAD software.
INTERIOR DESIGN COLLEGE : I studied properly the text books in architecture for GATE exam and I have taught the same as a part time faculty in a diploma interior design college after office hours and on weekends. I used to get 1,500 per day for teaching 9 hours.
From teaching I didn’t earn much though. Something between 50,000 to 60,000 was my overall earning since 2013.
Stock Market : I studied infrastructure finance in IIT as a subject in my coursework for my masters. Got interested in it straightaway. Started investing for the first time in October 2014. Till now I have earned around 15,100 from stock market. I am still learning and hope to churn out more returns in the future.
With all due respect to Architecture course and profession I believe if I would have chosen IT/CS or commerce or any fucking other profession and given this much of effort I would have earned a lot more. But the BIG QUESTION remains about being happy?? I am happy with what I do, so yeah at the of the day I do feel bad when a big car passes by my new 110cc scooter but while working on the designs at my job its a pure pleasure. I think at the back of my mind, how many architects in this country get a chance to design scientific labs for top scientists !!
