Ladies and gentlemen, this is the ultimate freshers’ pre-drinks playlist

You’re going to university and you’re about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. But before you can start thinking about all the exciting things that lie ahead, there’s Freshers’ Week. The baptism by fire through which you’ll forge alliances that will last you your entire university career and beyond.

Every Freshers’ night needs a pre-drinks and every pre-drinks needs a don-dada to set the vibe for the whole squad to follow. To help you seize that opportunity, we’ve curated the perfect playlist for the night.

Allow us to break it down.

The perfect pop songs

Your appreciation of what’s popping in the charts will definitely make you the most friends this Fresher’s Week. It’s a damn good time for pop though, so celebrate by bumping some Lorde, Charli XCX, Craig David and yes – if you must – Despacito. If I were you though, I’d draw for Khalid’s ‘Young, Dumb & Broke’. Not only is it an absolute choon, but it’s a pretty-aptly titled anthem for our generation.

The songs for the ravers

Whether you like house every weekend or you eat, sleep, rave and repeat, you’ve got a fine selection of main room music to work with.

You’ve got the instantly recognisable dance hits from Blonde, Mura Masa, Tough Love and more present and correct. The Clean Bandit remix of Flume and Tove Lo’s ‘Say It’ is a particularly tasty jam if we may say so.

The hip-hop essentials

Remember, this is a 2017 pre-drinks playlist we’re talking about. You’re going to need something people can milly rock to.

Ubiquitous hip-hop hit-machine Kanye West is an absolute must here. Show the world your money moves to Cardi B’s ‘Bodak Yellow’, or jam out to the sounds of Migos, 21 Savage and Lil Uzi Vert. If you really wanna turn a room into a riot though, just play ‘Wild Thoughts’ and watch the magic happen.

The soundsystem bangers

Hey. You know what’s cool? Bashment. With music big-wigs like Drake and Ed Sheeran having a go at the genre, the trendier pre-drinks DJs will make sure to include some on the playlist.

Some J Hus or Hardy Caprio is guaranteed to get some hips moving. For your London/big city-born flatmates, we’ve also included tunes from grime heavy-hitters Skepta, Stormzy and Kano. Unstoppable viral smash Man’s Not Hot by Big Shaq is here too, just in case you meet someone who doesn’t know how the ting goes. (Skrrrra! Pap pap pap kaka…)

The indie party tunes

There’s always that one person at the pre-drinks whose music taste is way more niche than everybody else’s.

Surprise them (and yourself) with some left-field choices from the likes of Grimes, Toro y Moi, Neon Indian and The Postal Service that’ll appease the most discerning critic and still get the rest of your crowd shaking and shuffling.

The classics

To those songs without which a pre-drinks playlist would not be possible, we salute you.

They may seem like cautious bets. But songs like ‘Pass Out’, ‘When The Sun Goes Down’ and ‘Mr. Brightside’ are timeless classics and would probably be welcomed on your pre-drinks playlist, your wedding, your children’s pre-drinks playlist, your funeral, AND your children’s children’s pre-drinks playlist. The unifying power of these songs will endure forever.
