How much does an ultrasound tech make per hour at hospitals (with benefits)? How many hours do they work in a week and how much money do they make in one year?

The hourly wage for ultrasound technicians (or sonographers) can vary based on factors such as location, experience, and the specific hospital or healthcare facility. As of my last update in August 2023, here are some general figures:

Hourly Wage

  • Average Hourly Wage: Around $30 to $40 per hour.
  • With Benefits: When factoring in benefits, the overall compensation can be higher, often estimated to add about 20-30% to the base salary.

Weekly Hours

  • Typical Work Schedule: Ultrasound techs usually work full-time, which is typically around 36 to 40 hours per week. Some may work overtime or part-time depending on the facility’s needs.

Annual Salary

To calculate the annual salary:
– For a 40-hour work week:
– At $30/hour:
– Weekly: $30 × 40 = $1,200
– Annual: $1,200 × 52 weeks = $62,400
– At $40/hour:
– Weekly: $40 × 40 = $1,600
– Annual: $1,600 × 52 weeks = $83,200

Summary

  • Hourly Wage: $30 to $40 (base), higher with benefits.
  • Weekly Hours: Typically 36 to 40 hours.
  • Annual Salary: Approximately $62,400 to $83,200.

These figures can fluctuate based on region, level of experience, and demand for ultrasound technicians. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, checking local job postings or salary surveys would be beneficial.

I don’t work as an ultrasound technician but believe that depends on how much experience you have, if you have extensive training in difficult cases, the location of where you will be working such as a downtown facility or a suburban location and if full time or part time all change your pay rate. I imagine too if you don’t need healthcare benefits too (such as your spouse or partner already having them for you) that might help too. The number of hours you work depends on your schedule. Since only you know answers to these questions, do your own research.
