I was in HVAC for almost 40 years, never with the tools, always in sales or management. Distributor outside sales was the most lucrative – long hours but never less than $150k per year income. That is probably higher than most, but I was a commercial product and systems expert and highly sought after. My years as a contractor was second, income was less than $100k per year but I built plenty of equity ownership in the company that I was able to cash out when I left. My time with a manufacturer was the least lucrative, but it served the purpose of allowing me to become a product expert.
