What’s on Quora?

How much do people working in cybersecurity earn?

Unfortunately that question is too broad to provide a simple answer. It is sort of like asking “how much do people in medicine earn?”
As an example, that would encompass quite a few professions including phlebotomists (who draw blood), medical records clerks, nurse assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, Surgeons (of many specialties), family practice doctors, orderlies, and ambulance drivers. Those professions have widely varying compensation models and earning opportunities.

The range in cybersecurity might include jobs like network security software developer, Security Operations Center (SOC) analyst, IT auditor, forensic investigator, malware reverse engineer, trainer, compliance officer, penetration tester, cryptographer, identity and access management provisioning clerk, and the like. There are many niches.

If someone is already competent in fundamental ways at building or designing information technology, there are many different kinds of ways that they might work in the security field, according to a wide variety of interests. If they’re really good at low-level networking, that’s a straightforward transition. If they’re a data scientist, there are certainly opportunities there as well. If they’re a compiler designer, there are people working in the area of language security.

I will say this about the information security world. To some reasonably large degree, it is a meritocracy. If someone is good at what they do, there are usually chances to take advantage of or create attractive job opportunities. There are jobs where people never wear suits and only wear black T-shirts, other places where people always wear suits, and still others where they only wear military uniforms.

There is some satisfaction in knowing that you’re helping to keep something important (be it a small company, a department of a large company, a government agency, or a military unit) running well. If you really want to try to help a lot of people at once, there are probably always opportunities in the telecommunications carrier side of things. The same can be said of banks.

It is also a field, that, for the moment, has cultivated a lot of research opportunities, be they academic, commercial, or independent. No, hacking your neighborhood business doesn’t count as “research.” (It might, but there are usually consequences for that.) There are, however, a lot of people running multiple computers or virtual machines on one computer and looking into various ways that things fail and what the consequences might be. They do this on their own time, and sometimes discover things that turn out to be valuable.

I think in terms of sheer earning opportunities, I would use Information Technology (in general) for examples when thinking about compensation, with the understanding that specific subject matter expertise in security might be additionally valuable.

I hope that helps.
