While Michael knew he wanted to work in IT, he didn’t know exactly what he wanted to specialise in, so his placement at GE has been the perfect introduction to the industry. “I’m doing so many different things. I get to have a taste of analytics, or development, or management, so I get to see what I want to do in the future.”
He applied for the role at GE after he was Talent Spotted for the role, and admitted he would have been unlikely to find the role if he had been job hunting himself. “I didn’t really know much about GE until I saw it on Debut, so the app gave me the opportunity to look into it more. If I had just been looking for jobs myself, I probably wouldn’t have found it.” After only using the app for a few weeks he had applied for the job, and two interviews later he received a job offer.
He started a few months ago, and so far he has enjoyed developing his soft skills. “We’re on conference calls a lot of the time, so you’re communicating with people from different countries and time zones. I’m doing some business analyst stuff at the moment, as well as some development, which is really interesting and engaging, but it can hard at the same time.”
These were skills he started to develop when he attended Debut’s Future of Tech event in collaboration with O2. He learnt all about “networking with people, talking to them, interacting and trying to make a good impression.”
Michael’s already settled in and thriving at his new role with GE, and looking forward to what the future holds.
