Circular economy thinking will be a cornerstone to the successful transition to a circular economy and will cover a diverse range of jobs across all sectors in Scotland. Our workforce development team focus on influencing the education, skills and workforce development landscape.

ZWS is looking for an enthusiastic individual to intern within the Policy, Evaluation & Research Workforce Development Team on a 9-month internship programme.

This role will support the team in identifying and mapping foundation data on the circular economy education provision across colleges and universities, reporting on the level of Zero Waste Scotland activities undertaken to build skills and knowledge around circular economy and to evidence how valued this has been and how important it is for the future of a Scottish Circular Economy.

You will undertake a variety of projects and ZWS’s aim is for you to build your technical knowledge on the education provision currently in place, develop analytical skills through analysis of your findings and develop your report writing skills.

Additionally, ZWS hope you will learn about system change through workforce development in relation to influencing the design of education curricula.

Your key tasks will be:

• Mapping of courses across Scotland’s college and university tertiary education providers that include circular economy aspects, identifying the depth of circular economy thinking and skills development in the course
• Work alongside the Workforce Development Manager and Project Manager to
critically review the provision of circular economy tertiary education to identify gaps
• Provide ad-hoc workforce development support to Zero Waste Scotland delivery teams and key stakeholders
• Mapping of training and upskilling opportunities delivered by Zero Waste Scotland by engaging programme teams to record learning activities that have been completed
• Collate and review existing evaluation data to extract relevant detail relating to activities that increase skills
• Complete stakeholder engagement with external recipients of support to find out more about how recipients benefited. This will involve developing a structured interview question set and then completing these interviews either in person or over the phone (with internal colleagues and external clients)
• Write a Narrative Evaluation Report summarizing the data collected through previous tasks. The objective of the report will be both to demonstrate the level of activity already completed and also the importance of a comprehensive CE skills programme.


ZWS is looking for someone with excellent people skills and professionalism as you’ll be interviewing members of ZWS staff as well as external stakeholders and as such, you will be representing ZWS externally.

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate:

• Good verbal communication skills
• Good written communication skills
• Ability to work on own initiative, although guidance will always be available
• Ability to think critically
• Ability to problem solve, using best available resources
• Good organisation and time management skills with the ability to work to multiple deadlines
• Have knowledge of MS Office, including Excel

• An interest in research, workforce development, organisational development or systems change would be beneficial
• An understanding of qualitative research methods and previous experience of research of a similar nature would be advantageous, but not be essential
• Experience of producing a synthesis or summary research report would also be a key advantage
