To stay on top, Airbus recognises the importance of supporting high-achieving and talented undergraduates. We do this through offering challenging placement opportunities during which your skills and potential are fully maximised.

Our placements give a unique insight into potential career paths within Airbus. They are designed so that you can put your theoretical knowledge into practice and gain crucial industry experience. The skills and knowledge you gain will improve your chances of a future role within the Airbus and should benefit your future studies.

The Mechanical engineering and hardware group is responsible for the analysis, development and test of spacecraft Mechanical Structures up to full Spacecraft Level, in support to the various Airbus Defence and Space groups, as well as detailed design analysis and test of spacecraft equipment, such as antennas and mechanisms. The responsibilities typically span the full project life-cycle from early conceptual design support through qualification and up to final delivery to the Customer.

Typically, the work of the department involves defining the concept design in cooperation with the project architects and designers, and creating a mathematical model representing the mechanical Geometry and properties of the system. The model is used to evaluate the design, through calculating the performance i.e. stiffness, mass and strength of the system. In the latter part of a project lifetime, the emphasis moves from theoretical analysis to support-to-manufacture and test of the system. At spacecraft level, integration and testing can take place in various locations throughout Europe. At equipment level, the facilities in Stevenage are generally used.

The role for the Mechanical engineering Intern is to support the varied work of the Mechanical engineering and hardware group such as on large ESA science projects like the ExoMars Rover module and the intensely competitive provision of global telecommunications via the Airbus Defence and Space EUROSTAR 3000 and 3000neo family of spacecraft. . There will also be an opportunity to take ownership of several internal Process Improvement tasks with the support of a senior engineer.

The three main activities of the role:
