A Graduate Waste Management Support Officer is required by Devon County Council, seconded from the University of Exeter on an Exeter based/home working basis. The role involves working on waste management projects including: schools waste education; and reduce, reuse & recycle behavioural change work with the general public. This is a 23 month GBP graduate role, available immediately and subject to a 12 month probation period.

A graduate is required at Devon County Council (though you will be employed by the University of Exeter) to work on several waste management projects, including promoting schools waste education work and behavioural change work. This post is available immediately and is part of the Graduate Business Partnerships scheme.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose of Role

To influence, educate and change the behaviour of the Devon public in relation to reducing, reusing and recycling their waste.

Duties and responsibilities

To assist with a variety of tasks, including:

+ expand the Waste Prevention Guide project to all areas of Devon

+ produce short video clips for use online

+ promotional activities to support a Grow Your Own campaign

+ research and development to reach and engage with 18-to-24-year-olds

+ research and creation of online media content

a variety of tasks in relation to schools waste education work, including

+ maintaining and developing the waste education website https://zone.recycledevon.org/, using Word Press

+ create a range of short, child focussed Waste Education videos on a variety of topics (careers in waste, zero waste lunches, case studies, composting), using Adobe Premiere

+ update existing and create new take-home sheets

+ school and community tours to the Pinbrook Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) and Energy Recovery Facilities in Exeter and Plymouth

+ school & community events to promote sustainable waste and resource practices at home, school and at work.

assistance with the Devon Reuse Project

assistance with the Devon Food Rescue Project

The postholder will also undertake any other duties commensurate with this level of post and as assigned by the line manager.

Training and Development opportunities

Training and support will be given where required.

The university also offers online and in-person learning and development opportunities, including mandatory online training in Prevent Duty - Inclusive, Cohesive and Safe Universities; Equality and Diversity Introduction; Health and Safety Introduction and Information Governance.

Level of Support

The graduate will be line managed by the Waste Management Officer (Education and Communities) with day to day input from the Senior Waste Managers for Communications and Special projects.

The university offers extensive support to staff, including a structured Professional Development Review and Wellbeing Service, plus GBPs are offered 1:1 support from the Internships Team and regular 1:1 meetings with their line manager.

Qualifications

Graduate of a UK university within the last 3 years.

Personal Qualities and Attributes

Essential: enthusiastic, self-motivated, requiring a minimum of supervision, dependable and trustworthy.

Desirable: organised and methodical, understanding of and commitment to sustainability issues, ability to meet deadlines and targets, commitment to equal opportunities, ability to carry out the post with reasonable adjustments where necessary

Communication skills

Essential: should be able to demonstrate good verbal and written skills including punctuation and grammar; confident communicator with the public; flexible and diplomatic with good interpersonal skills

Desirable: experience of dealing with school aged children, experience of using a range of social media sites

IT skills:

Essential: IT literate with standard Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Desirable: experience in use of website CMS (Word Press); video making skills (using Adobe Premiere)

Acquired skills:

Essential: ability to work independently and as part of a team, ability to carry out research.

Desirable: awareness of waste management issues, promotion and marketing skills

+ The successful candidate will be required to have a DBS check

+ Ability to travel with reasonable adjustments where necessary

In the unlikely scenario where a degree is not awarded, the GBP hours may be reduced to 15hrs a week (for undergraduates) or 6hrs a week (for postgraduates) to enable to the graduand the capacity to successfully complete their degree. If the graduand fails their degree the GBP role will end early
