About the Role

  • To support OPSS to improve the impact of its work and the utilisation of its resources;
  • To ensure the effective oversight and governance for key programmes of work;
  • To apply a consistent and proportionate approach to Programme and Project Management (PPM) across OPSS;
  • To support the Leadership Team in handling delivery and interpersonal risks;
  • To provide practical support to individual project teams in leading their work.

An excellent opportunity for someone who wants to learn how to be an outstanding project manager. You will learn all aspects of project management from the ground up and gain hands on experience in a range of project delivery methodologies as you participate in formal training. You will experience a wide range of exposure to the project and programme environment to put your skills into practice and will be fully supported by PPM specialists in the PMO, and have access to training and standard methodology within BEIS.

You will be supported to undertake BSc (Hons) Project Management Degree apprenticeship, which includes 20% of your time being spent on your apprenticeship. This will help you to learn new skills and knowledge that you can apply in the workplace.

The degree takes four years to complete and will suit someone who's interested in and committed to a career in project management.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities:

  • Delivery & Leadership - Support capability building and use the standard methodology in planning and reporting.
  • Project Planning- Develop and maintain project plans, gain assumptions and identify dependencies.
  • Resources - Identify project resource requirements through the application of project planning techniques.
  • Schedule Management - Arranging meetings and events, coordinating diaries and meeting rooms etc
  • Risk & Issue Management - Maintain risk registers, issue logs and change records.
  • Partner Management - Work with partners to ensure plans are comprehensive.
  • Performance & Highlight Reporting - Collects information from project leads and partners to produce performance and highlight reports.
  • Development of Project tools - Supporting the implementation and maintenance of appropriate systems and tools to enable effective planning and scheduling activities
  • Mentorship & Support - Provide advice and support on planning processes throughout the lifecycle of each project to non-PPM staff, participating in the delivery of PPM training.

We are very keen to hear from you if you have the following skills, we will also give you the support to develop these areas:

  • Practical experience of the full range of MS tools, particularly excel and MS project skills in project circumstances.
  • Can demonstrate that you have attention to detail, are organised and methodical
  • You are a self-starter and work well in a changing environment

The Project Management Apprenticeship is sought towards those without a degree or other higher level qualifications, in order to provide an entry route into the Civil Service for those from various backgrounds.

For this reason, applicants must not have a degree level qualification, or higher. This includes any qualification which is level 6 or above and is the equivalent to a degree.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Good communication and partnership skills, establishing and developing positive relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Proficient IT literacy skills, particularly MS Office suite of products specifically Word & Excel.
  • Willingness and desire to learn.

Desirable:

  • Experience of involvement in a support role for projects or programmes; supporting leaders arranging meetings, coordinating workshops and other events; working with risks and issues in a project environment.
  • Previous experience of working in a project management role.
  • Candidates in possession of a Level 4 project management qualification will be able to start the apprenticeship at Level 5.
  • PRINCE2 Foundation.
