Job description

We are looking for an apprentice to work in the setting, who will work and complete NVQ level 2 or 3 training with us. We will liaise with Babcock training.

This is a great opportunity to get a start in the childcare sector. We have already taken two students through the apprentice route and one has gone on to gain her degree, She is testament to how the apprenticeship system can get you the experience you need to move forward as well as gaining a qualification.

We are seeking to employ an apprentice who wants to move forward in the industry and sees the apprenticeship system as a way of developing their skills and qualifications whilst at work.

What makes a good Pre-school practitioner!

  • You must have a warm smiling face that makes every child feel special.
  • You must be able to laugh at jokes you dont understand, or you dont find funny!
  • You will preferably have a little bit of quirkiness. If a child requests that you be a captain of a pirate ship, you will be the best pirate captain you can be!
  • The ability to sing in tune is not necessary, however the ability to sing out of tune in front of a crowd is essential.
  • You must feel comfortable telling everybody in the same room as you, that you are going to the toilet!
  • You must be able to distribute warm hugs as required.
  • You will leave work every day with muddy, wet clothes and know that it means its been a good day!
  • You are confident enough to closely supervise 3 year olds climbing trees, and wont faint when they get a little higher than expected! You trust and respect that children can manage their own risks.
  • Possessing the skills required to rapidly count the heads of numerous moving small people is of the utmost importance.
  • Must be comfortable entering public places on the way home from work, with unknown substances on your clothing.
  • You must have a high level of comfort around talking about bodily functions. You must have a strong sense of smell to enable you to respond to said bodily functions.
  • Pretending to eat playdough creations realistically is required, and that of drinking numerous cups of pretend tea.
  • You must have the ability to read a ten page fairy tale, upside down, with at least 4 interruptions per page.
  • You must be prepared to have lots of fun in the workplace. Laughter is something you can expect to engage in for a large part of your working day.
  • Finally, you must be prepared to feel loved, special and important to many young children and their families. There is simply no other job quite like this one.

Other duties include setting up play equipment and clearing away at the end of session. Being part of the staff rota: which includes changing nappies and snack preparation.

The candidate will be asked to attend CPD sessions as well as staff and parents meetings.

As an apprentice you will be included on a Childcare qualification, this will involve a Vocational Learning Advisor will visit you on a regular basis to deliver the training and will be observing whilst you work.

Skills required

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and energetic individual who loves messy play, singing songs and getting involved with children and can work well in a team.

Balanced with being professional, caring and patient. The candidate must have a desire to develop their knowledge of childcare through the Early years Foundation stage and we hope as they develop their skills they will start to take on a shared keyworker role: observing childrens play and assessing childrens progress through the EYFS and liaising with childrens parents.
