Tanaka is a 20-year-old student at the University of Edinburgh. We met her at our second Women in Tech event. She felt particularly inspired by the event, praising its unique, laidback atmosphere and inspiring panelists. We sat down with her to chat about her good news – her recent acceptance of a two-week programme through the Debut app.
“I’ve recently accepted an offer from Deutsche Bank for their GROW (Graduate Outreach for Women) programme.
It happened really casually. I was walking with one of my friends and he was saying, “Oh, have you heard of Debut? It’s really really good.” I downloaded it, put a few details up and was like, OK, cool! The first thing that struck me about Debut was how many companies were there. Sooooo much choice. I left the app be for a while and didn’t think much about it. Later on in the semester, I was surprised by a few Talent Spots from Debut offering me various opportunities. I said ‘Yes’ to the Deutsche Bank programme, went through the application process, and the rest is history.
Before Debut, I felt like I was a bit of a lost child, just going through the motions of university. As an international student, the job application process was incredibly daunting. All of my family are based abroad, so I was on my own. I’m from Zimbabwe, and had no prior knowledge of the UK education or work system. I had the grades, but I had no further guidance as to how to approach job applications. Debut showed me that there were opportunities out there just for me.”
