When Oli started applying for graduate jobs as a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Manchester, he never imagined he would be applying for a job in technology.
“I think the word technology puts a lot of people off, as they think you’re going to need coding skills or technical skills, but I came into the job and I didn’t have a single bit of coding knowledge.”
So how did he end up applying for and ultimately thriving in his role as a Graduate Technology Consultant within IBM’s Consulting by Degrees programme? It all started with a simple Talent Spot to his phone notifying him that he was eligible to apply.
“It made me realise that I had some of the skills that they were looking for, and think that I might be a potential match for them.
“I’d obviously heard of IBM and come across a lot of their work but I initially hadn’t considered applying to them, as all the other companies I was applying to were engineering firms.
“I wouldn’t have applied without my Talent Spot, so you really have changed what I do for the next 40-45 years and I’m very grateful for that.”
Oli is now a few weeks into his role and enjoying every minute, learning new skills every day and tailoring his projects to suit his passions and interests.
“It’s not often an app has the ability to change the course of a person’s life, but it certainly did for me. I definitely wouldn’t have this job without it.”
